Holiday Medicine Making: Digestive Bitters

  • The Elderberry 1917 Commonwealth Drive Charlottesville, VA, 22901 United States (map)

Sundays, November 22 - December 13th, 4-6pm | $65 each, all 4 for $250 | In-Person at The Elderberry

If you’re feeling a call to make high quality, potent herbal medicine in good company as the days grow shorter, please join Meg at The Elderberry for a Holiday Medicine Making series.

There’s something about the descent into the darker months that urges us to create beautiful herbal medicine. The last of the Autumn roots have been harvested and Summer’s leaves, fruits, and flowers are beautifully dried and full of potential, waiting to be infused into golden oils and alchemical spirits that will carry us through the darkest months and beyond. We crave the rich aromas and flavors of the herbs and spices that warm us, bring us together, and promote health and vitality during the chill of winter.

Whether you join for just one class or the whole series, you can expect thorough herbal medicine-making education through lecture and hands-on work in a cozy, festive atmosphere. We will discuss best practices, seasonal energetics, and share stories that will infuse our medicine with light, warmth, and community. And you will most certainly take home your work to gift, whether it be for your loved ones or kept to nourish your own body.

All levels welcome!

11/22: Dried Plant Tincture

A tincture is an herbal preparation made by macerating plant material in ethyl alcohol. It is one of the most common and accessible forms of herbal medicine, and its versatility is almost second to none. In this class we will learn how to make a good tincture, which herbs and alcohol to choose, a little bit about solubility, and what all of that even means. All while using our hands to apply what we’re learning in real time.

11/29: Herb-Infused Oil

In this class, we will learn the art of infusing herbs into carrier oils. We will learn about different carrier oils, oil-to-plant ratios, which herbs you might want to infuse into oil, and why. Of course, we will be doing all of this while making the medicine with our own hands.

12/6: Digestive Bitters

Bitters are a lovely, fun, and delicious way to incorporate herbs into your regimen. In this class, we will combine tinctures to create flavorful and effective digestive support that can be added to your holiday libations for a bit of festivity while also making sure everything runs smoothly as we go into the feasting season. With all of this information, you will create your own bitters formula, made to serve your unique taste and digestive needs.

12/13: Combined Body Oils

Topical oils are an excellent, safe, and beautiful way to incorporate herbal medicine into your care regimen, and wintertime is the perfect time to begin an herbal oiling practice. We will learn the ins and outs of herbal oil preparation, ratios, aromas, and discuss how and when they might be useful. With this information, you will create your own body oil, built to serve your skin’s winter needs.

$65 each, all 4 for $250
