Ancestral Connections and the Thin Veil

Thanks to our ancestors, we’re alive. We’re all works in progress, a never-ending journey of change. Our beloveds who have Transitioned to the other side continue to support and care for us. They surround us at this time and ask to be remembered and to offer support and advice. Your Other Worldly support group, so to speak. Samhain, Halloween, All Saints Day, Day of the Dead - all ancient acknowledgments of the thinning of the veil occurring at this time of year between the physical and the metaphysical.

This cycle of death and rebirth paves the way for Winter, where we go within to critically assess and rebirth what needs to happen. Everything we do matters, especially at this time. The future we’re creating, individual and societal,  needs to be considered in a long-term seven generations context. Some cultures had a council of elders who’d discuss how to walk the visions for a better future of their community. These councils are present today, but more are needed. Are your ancestors calling you to act for a better future, one that honors and respects all things (animate and inanimate), supports justice and equality of opportunity?

This is the preparation for the coming of winter, a season of going within and dreaming the future. In my own family, this season marks the anniversary of several deaths of close and distant relatives including one of my parents in addition to the recent deaths of several other family members. The grieving is still fresh, yet I also have the comfort of knowing that I can communicate with them at this time. The tradition of making a meal containing some of their favorite foods (plus a glass of the finest whisky to keep the fairies happy) and leaving a plate heaped with the goodies outside under the Elder tree in their honor is one I’ve been following for the past few years. I’ll say a blessing for those who have passed, reminisce about our time together and listen for any messages.  Once one of my aunts, who was a bank teller, sent me a message regarding financial issues I was considering (but hadn’t mentioned it to her). Other times I’d request guidance on a particular issue and they always respond, even if it was “You’ve got this!”

This Bodhisattva prayer for humanity captures the vision of our connection to others, even if they’re no longer present on this earth. and wanting to be of service to the world.

May I be a guard for those who need protection

A guide for those on the path

A boat, a raft, a bridge for those who wish to cross the flood

May I be a lamp in the darkness

A resting place for the weary

A healing medicine for all who are sick

A vase of plenty, a tree of miracles

And for the boundless multitudes of living beings

May I bring sustenance and awakening

Enduring like the earth and sky

Until all beings are free from sorrow

And all are awakened.
